National Travel Assistance Programme Changes Welcomed

The National Child Cancer Network (NCCN) welcomes the Government’s recent announcement of significant changes to the National Travel Assistance (NTA) programme.

The announcement, effective April 1st, 2024, included a much-needed 50% funding increase ($18 million), raising mileage rates from 28 cents to 34 cents per kilometre and an increase in nightly accommodation rates from $100 to $140. Support for those staying with friends or whānau also rises from $25 to $35 per night. Additionally, the program now accepts claims via email.

“This announcement acknowledges the importance of accessible healthcare for all New Zealanders,” said NCCN National Programme Manager, Amy Carter. “The increased funding and revised rates are a positive step forward. They will help ensure children with cancer can access essential treatment without the added stress of financial burden on their whānau.”

The NCCN looks forward to the Government’s implementation of further planned improvements to the NTA program. These include easier pre-payment and claiming options, refined eligibility criteria to better target those most in need, and enhanced promotion and awareness campaigns to ensure all eligible New Zealanders are aware of the NTA.
