09 Jan NCCN celebrates Dr. Scott Macfarlane’s knighthood for services to health
NCCN is delighted to celebrate the recent knighthood of Dr. Scott Macfarlane for services to health. This prestigious recognition in the 2024 New Year Honours list is a well-deserved tribute to Dr. Macfarlane’s dedication throughout his career to transforming the treatment and improving outcomes for children with cancer in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Sir Scott worked for more than 35 years as a paediatrician and paediatric oncologist and was also the National Clinical Leader for the National Child Cancer Network. He started his career as a paediatric oncologist at Waikato Hospital, before taking up a role at Starship Hospital in Auckland, where he became Clinical Leader and Clinical Director. He was instrumental in establishing the National Child Cancer Network in 2011, and was the Clinical Lead of the Network until his retirement in 2021.
Sir Scott was made a life member of the Child Cancer Foundation in 2015. He was president of the Australia New Zealand Children’s Haematology Oncology Group and remains a trustee of the World Child Cancer Charitable Trust.
Dr. Macfarlane’s knighthood is a testament to his outstanding contributions to child health in New Zealand. He was an an integral part of the success achieved for childhood cancer outcomes to date, and his work has made a real difference to the lives of countless children and their families.
